Filing for Unemployment Insurance (UI) Benefits
To apply and certify weekly for unemployment benefits:
As soon as possible after becoming unemployed or if you face a reduction in work hours, you can file your claim for unemployment benefits online. You will first register and select a personal identification number called your PIN. If you have questions and need the assistance of a Customer Service Agent, please call the NMDWS Unemployment Insurance Operations Center at 1-877-NM-4-MYUI (1-877-664-6984), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Whether you file your claim online or by telephone, you will be asked questions about your employment history during the last eighteen months. You should have each employer's name, address, phone number, and dates of employment available. Be prepared to explain the reason for separation from your last employer.
You will also be asked to provide your social security number and citizenship status. To prevent a delay in processing your claim, the information must be complete and correct when you file your claim.
New Mexico pays a weekly dependant allowance for each verified dependant under the age of eighteen, up to two dependants. You will be asked to provide each dependant's social security number and other pertinent information to verify you provide over 50% of their support. Once verified, you will receive an additional $25.00 for each dependant per week up to $50.00 per week.
New Mexico requires a one-week waiting period after you claim is filed. This means that you will not receive a check for the first week that you are eligible for and certify for benefits. This is called your waiting week. Your payment will start with the second week you are eligible and certify for benefits.
Once your claim has been filed, you can file your weekly claim for benefits. This is referred to as your "weekly certification." To certify for benefits:
Payments will be issued if you meet all eligibility requirements.
